MBS COVID-19 Telehealth Items (UPDATED)
As of 30 March 2020, the new MBS COVID-19 Telehealth items can now be claimed via videoconferencing or phone for all clients who have a GP Mental Health Care Plan or appropriate referral from their psychiatrist or paediatrician.
The new MBS items will allow individuals to access essential health services in their home while undergoing self-isolation or physical distancing to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19 for ourselves and the community.
This is currently a temporary measure, which will end on 31 December 2021.
Who is eligible?
All individuals with a valid referral that attracts a Medicare rebate (e.g., GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, psychiatrist referral or paediatrician referral).
Do you need to be referred under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) to access these items?
Will there be a gap payment?
Yes, for all clients there will be a gap payment.
The Medicare rebate is currently $128.40 and can be claimed by clients following a consultation by sumitting their reciept directly to Medicare. The out-of-pocket expense will add to your Medicare Safety Net, which when reached will result in a Medicare refund of up to 80% of any further items claimed under Medicare, with a yearly cap on some item numbers, including psychology item numbers.
Are these sessions counted in a client’s annual limit of 10 sessions under a MHCP referral?
What if I want to use my Private Health Insurance and attend as a private patient?
Clients can choose to attend consultations privately. They will be provided with a receipt at their end of their consultation and may claim a rebate directly from their Private Health Insurance, if they are covered for psychology services that are delivered via video-conferencing.
What platform is being used for videoconferencing?
Whilst Australian providers are not required to comply with HIPAA standards, these standards exist to ensure security of client information. Perth Clinical Psychologists utilises HIPAA compliant platforms.
Perth Clinical Psychologists currently uses Google Duo, a secure freely available app that can be downloaded to a smart-phone (click here for iPhones) (click here for Android phones).
